One of Japan’s leading scenic artists and art directors. Noted for his work as an art director on titles such as Future Boy Conan, Grave of the Fireflies, Fantastic Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
He was also one fifth of Princess Mononoke's art directors. In 1995, Hayao Miyazaki went to the ancient forests of Yakushima, of Kyushu, an inspiration for the landscape of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and the mountains of Shirakami-Sanchi in northern Honshu for location scouting along with the five art directors and other production staff.
On August 19, 2023, he died of stomach cancer at his home, aged 70.
