A Japanese singer-songwriter and record producer who helped pioneer the style of Japanese adult-oriented rock/soft rock dubbed "city pop." Yamashita has produced the majority of his music since the '70s, and is sometimes considered an important contributor to Japanese music.

Yamashita is one of the most commercially successful Japanese male solo artists in the history of the Japanese album chart, having sold approximately 9 million albums in total. He has also composed for films and television commercials, and worked on records by other artists.

Married to Mariya Takeuchi. They have one daughter.
