島田啓三
Keizou Shimada
Shimada received instructions in cartooning from Rakuten Kitazawa, a famous artist. Shimada began his career with drawing cartoons for children. In 1933 he acquired fame while making a pictorial edition of the world map that was published by Yasutaro Sato. It is a depiction of the Japanese Empire where both Taiwan and Korea were included as parts of the empire. The map represents a variety of vignettes designed to illustrate the regional culture, flora and fauna, which can also highlight its military aspect. This world map still has relevance nowadays.
