Yoru Sumino began writing during his high school years. He submitted his first story to the Dengeki Novel Grand Prize, but unfortunately, it did not pass the initial round of selection. Determined, he decided to revise his writing style to publish "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas", but the final manuscript turned out to be too long to be eligible for the prize.
His first novel was eventually published on Syosetsu in 2014, under the pen name Yasumi Yano. The following year, the story was officially published by Futabasha. In 2016, Sumino achieved the second place in the Booksellers Award for "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas". In 2019, his novel "I am Blue, in Pain, and Fragile" secured the top spot for the most-read books by 20-year-olds in 2018 according to honto.jp.
